Plus, DeVito, 81, and Perlman, 78, have spent more time in each other’s lives than apart. After all, the pair first met in 1971 after Perlman went to watch a friend in an off-Broadway show, which featured DeVito, before the trio all went out together afterward.
Looking back, DeVito shared that he and Perlman, who wed in 1982, “hit it off.”
“We liked off-Broadway stuff,” he recalled. “We went to movies all the time. We made little movies together—short films.”
Indeed, during their marriage, the duo teamed up for multiple projects together, including their notable joint appearances in Matilda and Taxi.
“We had a lot in common, and we fell in love,” DeVito continued. “A nice Jewish girl from Brooklyn and an Italian from New Jersey: I cooked and she ate.”
