The latest episode of Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update sparked a whirlwind of reactions, tackling a surprising topic that left viewers talking. In the SNL sketch, the cast member playing Snape made a startling comment about the Harry Potter franchise, branding it as racist.

SNL’s ā€˜Snape’ actor calls out Harry Potter in new sketch

In a bold move, the actor portraying Snape on Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update took aim at the beloved Harry Potter franchise by making a pointed comment about the series.

Kam Patterson played Professor Snape on Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update, cleverly breaking character with a humorous remark. After Colin Jost introduced him, Patterson’s Snape said, ā€œGood evening, Mr. Jost — nah, I’m playing. I don’t talk like that, bro. It’s called code-switching. Codio switchio!ā€

When Colin Jost asked about his year at Hogwarts, Patterson’s Snape made a controversial comment. He said, ā€œNot great. We got a new kid, Harry Potter, and he’s racist. He goes around saying the school’s only Black teacher is secretly evil.ā€

Kam Patterson’s response was a clever jab at the racist stereotypes surrounding the casting of Black actor Paapa Essiedu as Snape in the new Harry Potter series. He said, ā€œSo somebody stole something, and the number one suspect is Black Snape? They didn’t even look at the white guy in the turban. So offensive. He’s got a wizard on the back of his head,ā€ referencing the plot twist where Voldemort appears on Quirrell’s head.

SNL’s Snape’s critique of the wizarding world was scathing, saying it was racist and tokenistic. He slammed the portrayal of Kingsley Shacklebolt, calling it stereotypical. ā€œThey dressed him up like he was selling cocoa butter incense out of a barbershop,ā€ Patterson said, highlighting the problematic representation. When asked if Shacklebolt’s outfit was cool, Snape replied, ā€œYeah, for a Haitian cab driver. And why they got to put ā€˜shackle’ in his name? That’s crazy, man. Shackle? Shackle!ā€

Kam Patterson’s argument had even host Colin Jost rethinking Harry Potter, wondering if J.K. Rowling was problematic.
