Selena Gomez is setting the record straight after being accused of throwing shade at her close friend, Taylor Swift.
The "Calm Down" singer, 33, commented "lol" underneath a post MTV shared on Instagram of Swift, 36, and actress Mariska Hargitay celebrating after the New York Knicks beat the San Antonio Spurs in Game 4 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday, June 10.
One photo in the post showed Swift with her arm around Hargitay, 62, as other Knicks fans surrounded them, while a second snap captured them both shouting and cheering. Longtime Spurs fan Gomez explained on her Instagram Stories that her comment on the post had been misinterpreted.
"Woke up and was sent so many texts," Gomez wrote. "I would never insult my friends nor was it an insult. The comment was a reaction to the first slide on the page," she continued, referencing the photo of Swift cheering and Hargitay looking overwhelmed as she lay her head on Swift's shoulder.

Then referring to a screenshot she shared on her Instagram Stories on Wednesday, Gomez added, "Second I bet my friends on the game. The friends in the text chain I posted. I lost but was poking at my opponents, my friends. Believe it or not I do have other friends in my life."
"But quickly forget that most assume otherwise. Also… it's a basketball game," Gomez concluded.
The statement followed an Instagram Stories post in which Gomez congratulated the Knicks for their 107-106 victory over the Spurs after trailing by 29 points at one period in the game. The win marked the biggest comeback in NBA Finals history.
"Mad respect for the game!! Congrats to the peeps that represent! What a come back," Gomez wrote over a screenshot of an NBA article, per US Weekly. "So funny how some are all the sudden fans though lol," she added.
The Only Murders in the Building star and pop superstar Swift became close pals after crossing paths in 2008, when Gomez was linked to Nick Jonas and Swift was seeing Joe Jonas.

"We actually dated the Jonas Brothers together! It was hysterical," Gomez told KISS FM UK in 2017. "It was amazing, because [Taylor] was the girl with the big curly hair and all the bracelets and the cowboy boots. And I was definitely up-and-coming, and we just clicked."
She jokingly added, "It was the best thing we got out of those relationships."
In September 2025, Swift was by Gomez's side when she wed music producerBenny Blanco. The singer-actress is expected to attend Swift's wedding to NFL star Travis Kelce, which is rumored to take place next month.

During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in October 2025, Swift insisted that she didn't mention her own upcoming nuptials while giving a speech at Gomez's wedding the month before.
"I did make a speech, but I actually made a point not to mention anything about my engagement, No one wants you to be like, 'Hey, I know this is your wedding day but—' " Swift said with a raised hand, showing off her ring. "I was like, 'Don't mention it.' "
The "Opalite" singer also gushed that her friend was "the most elegant, gorgeous bride" on her wedding day and a "vision." "I've never seen anything so beautiful as her on her wedding day, and she deserves all of this happiness," Swift added.
The day before, Gomez congratulated Swift on the release of her 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, and shared an unseen video from her Santa Barbara, Calif., nuptials and two photos.
"In honor of SHOWGIRL .. blessed to have you by my side almost 20 years later gator! I love you @taylorswift forever and always," Gomez wrote in the caption.
