No matter what Storms of LifeRandy Travis endures, he emerges on the other side with the same gentle smile that has made him a beloved icon to legions of fans across the globe.
In conversation with PEOPLE at the Nashville Palace, where a room was dedicated in his honor to mark the momentous occasion of 40 years since his landmark debut album, Randy and his wife, Mary, reflect on decades of love, life and bringing joy to the world through song.
"His heart is still gold, just like it was back then," Mary tells PEOPLE. Looking back at the then-young artist who recorded hits like "On the Other Hand" and "Diggin' Up Bones," she says fame has never altered the qualities that made Randy special in the first place.
"He's still that same humble, honest, funny, just kind of a boot shuffling kind of kid," she proclaims, which elicits a nod and a smile from Randy, 67. Those qualities remained intentional constants throughout his time in the spotlight, even as Randy became one of country music's most influential voices.

"Forty years ago he wasn't a legend. Today he's a legend," Mary notes. "That album was part of the reason. I mean, that kick-started the beginning of his legendary career."

When Storms of Life was released on June 2, 1986, by Warner Records, it quickly was regarded as a foundational masterpiece in the neotraditional country space. "The awards and the accolades, those are blood, sweat and tears. It's the time that I put in. It's the people that were there for me. It was the family of people on the road with me and the fans," Mary recalls Randy often saying, to which he nods.
"It wasn't what he bought but what he built. It wasn't what he got but what he gave," Mary explains. And to the woman who has remained by his side for years, that's the center of his artistry, and humanity, as a whole. "That's the heart of Randy Travis," she says.
