Queen Camilla faced "torrents" of public abuse following the revelation of her affair with King Charles, according to a royal expert.

Angela Levin, who published a biography of Camilla in 2022, revealed the Queen Consort was compelled to remain largely homebound to escape the severe public backlash from her relationship with Charles. Camilla reportedly feared even routine errands like shopping and relied on friends to run such tasks for her.

Angela Levin told OK!: "It was very difficult for her, as she was portrayed as the most wicked woman in the world. She was constantly called nasty names like 'rottweiler' and it must have come as a huge shock that people were so vile about her." This comes as the Queen celebrated her 79th birthday on July 17.

Charles and Camilla's affair allegedly commenced in 1986, five years following his marriage to Diana, though their relationship wasn't publicly confirmed until 1993 when a private phone conversation between them was leaked, reports the Express.

The revelation sent shockwaves throughout the nation, with the controversy quickly labeled "camillagate."

Despite enduring widespread abuse, Angela noted that Camilla "didn't complain or make a big fuss" and simply "stayed home and didn't go out."

Angela added: "I don't think Charles realised how awful it was for her. He was often away on engagements and working hard for the country and Commonwealth, and at the time Camilla didn't have protection officers because she wasn't part of the Royal Family. But when Charles finally realised, he did get protection for her, which he paid for himself."

Reports indicate that Charles personally funded two full-time protection officers for Camilla until their 2005 wedding, when she became eligible for publicly funded security.

Charles publicly acknowledged his extramarital affair during his marriage to Diana in June 1994, admitting his infidelity to Diana in a televised interview with Jonathan Dimbleby.

The identity of his mistress remained officially unconfirmed until excerpts from his authorized biography, also penned by Dimbleby, appeared in the Sunday Times later that month.

At the time, Dimbleby wrote: "That they loved each other was not in any doubt. In Camilla Parker Bowles, the prince found the warmth, the understanding and the steadiness for which he had always longed and had never been able to find with any other person."

While the public hostility Camilla encountered from an upset nation gradually subsided over the years, Angela Levin suggested she believes Camilla "must still bear the scars of it all.

"She still gets nervous about things," Angela explained.

"She can never be sure how people are going to react towards her," Angela maintains. "There's a small but very harsh group of people who still think she's the wrong woman for him."
