Mariah Carey knows how to put on a good show.
It was no fantasy — the Grammy-winning singer, 56, sang the Italian classic "Volare" as well as a new hit of her own, "Nothing Is Impossible," at Milan’s San Siro Olympic Stadium on Friday, Feb. 6 as part of the star-studded opening ceremony.
Carey sparkled in a dramatic white gown covered in silver jewels, which she accessorized with a feathery shawl and glittery jewelry including a butterfly ring.
"Volare," known in Italy as "Nel blu, dipinto di blu," was a major hit for Dean Martin in 1958, while "Nothing Is Impossible" is featured on Carey's latest record Here for It All, which came out in September.
Other performers and appearances at the opening ceremony include Andrea Bocelli, Italian actor and producer Pierfrancesco Favino alongside violinist Giovanni Zanon, The White Lotus actress Sabrina Impacciatore, Italian singer Laura Pausini, Chinese pianist Lang Lang and Italian singer Cecilia Bartoli and Italian-Tunisian rapper Ghali.

Carey announced her participation in the Olympics in December with an Instagram video that featured her speaking Italian in a glamorous red dress.
“Ciao. Get ready for Milano Cortina 2026. See you at the Stadium San Siro on the 6th of February for the Olympic opening ceremony. Ci vediamo a Milano,” she said in the clip that featured her looking glamorous in a red dress and diamond necklace, ending with a translation of “See you in Milan.”
In a statement shared with NBC, the Olympics local organizing committee said Carey “fully represents the emotional atmosphere that accompanies the run-up to the Games.”
The committee added, "Music is a universal language that attracts different stories and sensibilities, and intertwines with the opening ceremony’s theme of harmony."

Carey's performance at the Winter Olympics comes after she was named MusiCare's 2026 Person of the Year. During remarks, the "Touch My Body" singer said it was "overwhelming in the best possible way."
"Receiving this honor is one of the most profound moments of my life and career, and that’s kind of a big deal," she said. "When you look at the list of artists who have been named Person of the Year before me: legends, icons, my own heroes. To be included in that list is just beyond.”
Carey was celebrated at the event with performances of some of her most iconic songs, including "Hero" by John Legend, "Obsessed" by Kesha and "Always Be My Baby" by Billy Porter, to name a few.
In a recent cover story with Billboard, the "Fantasy" singer revealed why she doesn't consider herself a legend — despite having 19 No. 1 hits and five Grammys under her belt.
"Everybody has their own little meanings for what things they say," she told the outlet. "But I don’t call myself a legend. I’m just still working, still trying hard."
Meanwhile, her last performance was during Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest on Dec. 31, where she performed "Obsessed," "It's Like That" and "In Your Feelings."
