Jon Hamm revealed the secret to his happy marriage in a new interview with Elle
The actor reflected on relearning relationship skills after his previous long-term relationship with Jennifer Westfeldt ended

Jon Hamm is sharing the key behind his nearly three- year marriage to Anna Osceola.
While promoting the second season of his dark comedy, Your Friends & Neighbors, during an interview with Elle published on Thursday, April 2, Hamm revealed what he's learned about maintaining a happy relationship.
For the 55-year-old actor, the secret is simple: compromise, communication, and couples therapy.

"Having come out of a long relationship that was not a marriage, then being single and figuring out life in my late 40s, and then being in a relationship again and what that all means — compromise and communication and all the things that you have to relearn, or reteach yourself — it doesn’t come overnight," said Hamm, who was in a long-term relationship with Jennifer Westfeldt before marrying Osceola. The former couple split in 2015 after 18 years together.
The Mad Men star continued to the magazine, "It’s a practice that you have to get better at. It doesn’t come without mistakes and failures, but it’s based on love and a willingness to say, ‘I’ve gotta be able to do better than this, so I need to figure out how I’ve been less-than and work on it.’ And that’s going to therapy and couples therapy, asking, ‘Is it me, is it them, or is it us?’ And it gets better."
He added that "it’s not a competition" to be right, and that couples must remember that "two things can be true sometimes."

Hamm married Osceola, 37, at Anderson Canyon in Big Sur, California, on June 24, 2023, just four months after PEOPLE confirmed the couple's engagement. Among the celebrity guests were Billy Crudup, Paul Rudd and Tina Fey.

Just before getting married, Hamm opened up about the challenges that come with being in a relationship with another actor.
"The funny thing about this career is that there's no rule book," he told PEOPLE in June 2023. "You really have to lean on one another for their support and for any kind of advice."

Your Friends & Neighbors season 2 premiered on Friday, April 3. The hit Apple TV+ series will release weekly episodes every Friday until the finale on Friday, June 5.
