Jack Black doesn’t seem to be holding back when it comes to Ryan Gosling. The Super Mario Bros. Movie star playfully dubbed Gosling his “archenemy” after the Oscars snub of his hit song “Peaches,” a tongue-in-cheek feud sparked by Academy decisions.

Jack Black explained on The Tonight Show that the Bowser ballad “Peaches” got zero attention from the Academy, despite its popularity. “Everyone’s singing it, your kids are singing it. For a second, I thought we might get a nominash, and sure enough, we did not,” he said, describing both his disappointment and disbelief.

He admitted he campaigned for the song, but it wasn’t meant to be. Adding to his comic frustration, Gosling’s Barbie tune “I’m Just Ken” did land a nomination. “This Gosling, always snacking on my potatoes,” Black joked, making his faux rivalry with the Project Hail Mary actor official.

Technically, “Peaches” wasn’t even on the Academy’s December 2023 shortlist of 15 songs, so the nomination wasn’t possible from the start. Also, the award for “I’m Just Ken” would have gone to songwriters Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, not the performers (via EW). Still, Black let his “jealousy” shine through with humor, acknowledging the success of “I’m Just Ken” while poking fun at his own misfortune.

To make the rivalry more entertaining, Black performed a Bowser-themed song on the show, complete with a full costume. He said, “Just imagine me in a full Bowser costume right now,” and sang, “Bowser shall have his revenge!” His performance humorously imagined Bowser plotting his own comeback after the Oscar oversight.

Jack Black is a multi-talented actor, comedian, and musician who’s famous for his high-energy, fun performances. He became well-known for movies like School of Rock, Kung Fu Panda (as the voice of Po), Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, and Tropic Thunder. He’s also one half of the comedy-rock band Tenacious D. Over the years, Black has picked up several awards, including a Golden Globe nod for School of Rock and a bunch of MTV Movie Awards.
