Elliott calls O'Hara's death a "huge loss" and says working with her and the Levy family was a dream come true

Catherine O'Hara's gift for physical comedy is something Chris Elliott will always celebrate.

Elliott, 66, and the late O'Hara were costars in the breakout comedy, Schitt's Creek. During the premiere of his new movieScary Movie 6 on June 3, Elliott reflected on the time he got to spend working with O'Hara, who died January 2026.

"She was just a lovely woman, and a friend, and a supporter, and I loved working with her," Elliott told PEOPLE. "She was so much fun to work with."

The beloved six-season sitcom follows the wealthy Rose family, who are forced to move from their mansion in Los Angeles to the titular town and rebuild their lives after an embezzlement scandal. The show, which ran from 2015-2020, landed O'Hara an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress.

O'Hara, who played spoiled, eccentric housewife Moira Rose, and Elliott, who played quirky town mayor Roland Schitt, shared the screen for the entirety of the series.

Of all their scenes, Elliott can easily pick a favorite: "When their room caught fire and she needed to get her wigs saved."

This scene is featured in season 6, episode 1, in which Roland finds himself breaking into Moira's motel room after sparking a small fire from a toaster mishap. To rescue her from the smoke, he throws Moira over his shoulder and carries her out of the room.

Once they both get to safety, she dramatically sends Roland back into the smoke-filled room to retrieve her renowned wig collection.

"She kept naming the wigs and we'd have to go back out and get a wig," Elliott recounted.

Behind the scenes, O'Hara had some worries. "Catherine was so concerned about my back carrying her and she was light as a feather," Elliott told PEOPLE. "And I love doing physical comedy and she does too, and that was my favorite scene."

Elliott shared that O'Hara's shocking death was "such a loss, a huge, huge loss" and that he misses her every day.

In a statement to USA Todayearlier this year, Elliott wrote that working with O'Hara and the show's co-creators Dan and Eugene Levy was a dream come true for him, and that the experience was made even more special because,"Catherine was such a warm hearted, generous and humble human being."

The feeling was mutual. O'Hara told PEOPLE in 2024 that working with the Schitt's Creek cast was "just so fun and so lovely."
