India’s film censors have again trimmed a major Hollywood superhero release before its theatrical debut. Weeks after Superman underwent edits, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has also reached cinemas with mandated cuts.

Marvel’s latest Spider-Man adventure will arrive in Indian theaters with several changes after the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) cleared Spider-Man: Brand New Day with a UA 13+ certificate.

Although the film remains largely intact, the board instructed distributors to make three edits before release, including removing a romantic kissing sequence from the final cut shown in Indian cinemas (via Variety).

Beyond deleting the kiss, the CBFC directed the studio to sanitize parts of the film’s dialogue and subtitles by muting or removing several strong words and objectionable expressions from the English audio track.

The board also instructed the studio to add a static anti-liquor health warning to appear during scenes featuring alcohol consumption. Despite those changes, the core story and action sequences remain untouched, allowing audiences to experience the film’s central narrative as originally intended.

The move follows a similar decision involving James Gunn’s Superman before it reached Indian theaters. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) required several edits, trimming a total of 41 seconds from the film. Those cuts included a 33-second sequence featuring two kisses between Clark Kent and Lois Lane.

An additional scene showing an obscene hand gesture was shortened and replaced with an alternate version, while certain expletives were also removed. According to Bollywood Hungama, those who attended an early screening said the romantic moments felt oddly chopped up, with sudden cuts making parts of those scenes look awkward and disjointed.

Even with the CBFC edits, excitement around Spider-Man: Brand New Day hasn’t lost any steam. The movie brings Tom Holland and Zendaya back together as Peter Parker and MJ, picking up after Spider-Man: No Way Home, where Doctor Strange’s spell erased Peter’s identity from everyone’s memory. This time, the spotlight shifts to a more personal chapter, with Peter navigating life alone while taking on street-level threats instead of universe-ending crises.
