- The Academy has, at long last, announced that Glenn Close will receive her first Oscar.

- Close, Ridley Scott, and Floyd Norman are this year's Academy Honorary Awards recipients.

After decades of lauded onscreen performances and eight career Academy Award nominations, Close will finally receive her long-overdue Oscar at the 2026 Governors Awards. The news comes after her widely celebrated performances in films like *Fatal Attraction*, *Dangerous Liaisons*, and more.

Close is among this year's class of Academy Honorary Awards recipients, the Academy announced Wednesday. Ridley Scott and Floyd Norman, Disney's first Black animator, will be the other honorees at November's Governors Awards ceremony.

Close has long found herself at the center of an "overdue" narrative when she's in contention now, as she's amassed eight total competitive Oscar nominations without winning a single statuette. She and the late Peter O'Toole hold the dubious record for the most acting Oscar nominations without a win. She came closest, perhaps, in 2019, when she competed for Best Actress for her performance in *The Wife*, having earned multiple high-profile precursor honors leading up to the ceremony, and was visibly stunned when Olivia Colman (*The Favourite*) pulled off a stunning upset.

Close's other nominations were for *The World According to Garp*, *The Big Chill*, *The Natural*, *Fatal Attraction*, *Dangerous Liaisons*, *Albert Nobbs*, and most recently, *Hillbilly Elegy*.

Four-time Oscar nominee Scott (*Gladiator*, *Alien*) will also receive an honorary statuette at the event, after he helmed several Academy Award-winning projects in the past.

Norman's monumental career includes a 65-year tenure at Disney, where he became the studio's first Black animator and worked on titles like *Sleeping Beauty*, *The Sword in the Stone*, *Mary Poppins*, *The Jungle Book*, and *Robin Hood*.**

In addition to Close, Scott, and Norman, the Academy will present the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award to producers Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler, co-founders of Killer Films.

Together, they've worked on *Hedwig and the Angry Inch*, *One Hour Photo*, *May December*, and *Materialists*, and earned nominations for their work on Best Picture nominee *Past Lives*. Killer Films has produced other Oscar-nominated and/or -winning films, including *Still Alice*, *Boys Don't Cry*, and *Carol*.

"The Academy's Board of Governors is thrilled to present this year's Governors Awards to five remarkable individuals whose groundbreaking work has forever shaped the art of filmmaking," said Academy President Lynette Howell Taylor in a press statement. "Throughout her extraordinary body of work, Glenn Close's unparalleled emotional range has brought to life some of the most complex characters in cinema."

She added of the others: "Floyd Norman is the legendary animator who has broken barriers and inspired generations of artists over his remarkable career. Sir Ridley Scott is a true visionary whose decades-long legacy has left an immeasurable impact on global cinema and culture. Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler play a central role in American independent cinema, championing bold, ambitious and distinctive storytelling."

Last year's Honorary Oscar recipients were Tom Cruise, Debbie Allen, and production designer Wynn Thomas. Dolly Parton received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award as well.

The 2026 Governors Awards take place Nov. 15 at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Ovation Hollywood, followed by the 99th Oscars airing Sunday, March 14, 2027, on ABC, with Conan O'Brien returning as host.
